Ahmad Ardalan is an Iraqi author whose life has been shaped by movement, resilience, and survival.
Born in Baghdad in 1979, he moved at the age of two to Vienna, Austria, where he spent his early childhood immersed in a different culture. In 1989, following the end of his father’s diplomatic mission, he returned to Iraq and continued his education, later graduating in dentistry.
As instability grew in Iraq, Ahmad made the decision to leave once again—this time to the United Arab Emirates—where he rebuilt his life from the ground up. Although trained as a dentist, he transitioned into the business world, going on to hold senior roles across the pharmaceutical and FMCG industries throughout the Middle East.
But behind the career, stories were always forming.
Shaped by a multicultural upbringing, global travel, and deeply personal experiences—including an ongoing battle with cancer—Ahmad turned to writing as a way to capture identity, memory, and survival.
His first novel, The Clout of Gen, marked the beginning. But it was his return to Baghdad in 2013, after eleven years away, that became a turning point. That visit inspired The Gardener of Baghdad—a novel that would go on to reach readers around the world and offer a different, more human portrait of the city.
He continued to build a body of work that reflects both personal and universal themes, including Baghdad: The Final Gathering, The Boy of the Mosque, the Matt thriller series, and The Art Collector of Le Marais, inspired by his time in Paris.
Through his writing, Ahmad Ardalan explores exile, identity, love, and resilience—stories that begin in Baghdad, but speak far beyond it.
